Ian M-H: 8:40am Apr 12, 2006: Try http://www.arcticspas-uk.com/structure.html
"Corners are rounded with vertical tongue-and-groove 1" x 4" dadoed into top and bottom 2 x 4 rails" - looksto me as though they mean 2" x 4". -
Ian M-H: 8:43am Apr 12, 2006: The same product, this time with no inch symbols at all:
"Corners are rounded with vertical tongue-and-groove 1x4s dadoed into top and bottom 2x4 rails."
http://www.viking-leisure.co.uk/pages/spa/about.htm -
Harry Borsje: 8:43am Apr 12, 2006: or look at the DIY-instructions here http://doityourself.com/wood/gazebo.htm (wouldn't call that 'Schienen' actually) -
Harry Bornemann: 8:54am Apr 12, 2006: Danke, die Zoll-Frage ist damit geklärt, aber ich habe noch keine Referenz für eine deutsche Bezeichnung gefunden.

Querholz
Explanation:
In the US, a two-by-four is a standard lumber size used mainly in the construction of houses. They are referred to as studs (Kantholz). But it is not actually 2 inches by 4 inches. That's the "nominal size". The actual size is 1 1/2 inch by 3 1/2 inches. A rail is the horizontal member of a structure - as opposed to the stile - the vertical piece.

tongue-and-groove cedar dadoed into top and bottom 2 x 4 rails.

gespundetes Zedernholz verbunden durch Quernut mit schweren Querstücken?

Nominal size – 2x4 Actual size – 1 ½ x 3 ½ inches

http://www.indoorclimbing.com/bouldering_design.html

1 ½ inches = 3.8 cm
3 ½ inches = 8.8 cm

Kantholz – stud

-> But how to express 2x4 still eludes me.

agree jccantrell: And I though the horizontal was called a beam. Learn something new every day. --XX-- and you use 2x4s in making cabinets???

-> A beam in heavy construction but not in cabinetmaking. / See Harry's link - you can also see that the members aren't actually 2x4. And I used 2x4s here: http://www.cotorritotranslations.com/showpic.php?gallery_id=...
