Clarification request(s) and response
Ian M-H: 6:03am Jun 23, 2006: optovision's just typed something similar to what I was thinking. Maybe Kim will help us all with his wood knowledge. I would normally have expect to read "burr cherry" or "burl cherry", denoting wood with attractive swirls and a knotty appearance.
Ian M-H: 6:05am Jun 23, 2006: I've seen similar-looking wood called "Wurzelholz" in German, but cannot say whether botanists and cabinet makers would agree. http://www.albero-moebelhandel.de/html/holzarten.html
Im Webster unter burr: 6 a : any rounded knot or excrescence on a tree : BURL b : lumber or veneer cut from such a burr...

Nicole Schnell: 6:18am Jun 23, 2006: I was thinking of "burl wood", the piece looks like regular cherry, though, not at all like Bruyere/root. Oh, those creative catalog writers...

Kirschbaum-Maserholz
Explanation:
Hi Nicole - this is another one of those differences between UK and American English. Burr is the BE term for AE burl.

Maserholz:

Burl
The American term for a growth on a tree which we in Britain call a burr. See also: burr (1)
Burr (1)
A large wart-like growth, with twigs sprouting from it, found on the trunk of a tree. Internally the wood tissue is very confused and usually contains numerous dormant bud formations. The wood cut from a burr usually shows very attractive figure and is very highly prized by turners.
