Linear regression attempts to model the relationship between two variables by fitting a linear equation to observed data. One variable is considered to be an explanatory variable, and the other is considered to be a dependent variable.

Definition:
Die lineare Regression ist ein Element der Regressionsanalyse, einem statistischen Analyseverfahren. Sie betrachtet Beziehungen zwischen abhängigen und unabhängigen Variablen. Genutzt wird die Regressionsanalyse zum Beispiel am Kreditmarkt, in der Personaldiagnostik oder in den Naturwissenschaften. Carl Friedrich Gauß entwickelte die lineare Regression (Methode der kleinsten Fehlerquadrate). Dieses Verfahren dient dazu, beliebige Wertepaare durch eine lineares Modell mathematisch anzunähern. Als Ergebnis erhält man eine Ausgleichsgerade sowie eine Schätzung für deren Unsicherheit.
