neutral  SinnerAtta: I think it is "die, nicht der Spindel". Also, these are imperatives: the statement says "assemble", and should continue with "raise (insert the) stem through (into the) stuffing box..." or something of the sort.

  -> Of course it is "DIE Spindel" but it is - on the other hand - nevertheless correct to write "durch die Öffnung in DER Stopfbuchse (or more detailled:"Stopffbuchsenpackung"). The "apparently male" ending of "[bei] ... hindurchragendER [Spindel] is also OK.
