My two cents' worth: Political correctness: I remember a time when the yellow pages had lots of entries under the heading "screws". Perhaps because of the "street meaning" of the term, the term threaded fasteners is now widely (if not exclusively) used.

neutral  Schtroumpf: Genau darum müssen wir uns ja den Kopf zerbrechen, weil eben die Leute nicht "screw" schreiben :-) (aber für Sturm ist es um diese Zeit bei uns zu spät, gute Nacht)
