Explanation:
Gemeint sind die max. darstellbaren Abstufungen des Farbraums/Farbmodells pro Farbkanal (Rot/Grün/Blau), auch "Tonwertstufen/-übergänge" genannt. -- Also populärwissenschaftlich gesprochen, wie viele Schattierungen ein und derselben Farbe darstellbar sind.

Bei Blu Ray/HDMI-Video bezieht sich die Angabe tatsächlich auf jeden Kanal, die Farbtiefe beträgt bei drei Farbkanälen also insgesamt 36 Bit. Unter den ersten beiden obigen Links wird jedoch teilweise anders gerechnet (Angaben bezogen auf alle 3 Kanäle zusammen -- was aber hier die Übersetzung nicht beeinträchtigt).
