Medical - Medical: Dentistry / implantology
English term or phrase: Pterygoid implant / pterygoid plates
Pterygoid implant: A root form implant that has its origin in the region of the former second maxillary molar and its end point encroaches in the scaphoid fossa of the sphenoid bone. The implant follows and intrasinusal trajectory in a dorsal and mesio cranial direction, perforating the posterior sinusal wall and the pterygoid plates.

this word just keeps throwing me off... But here it seems not to be possible to use a Latin term, so how do we translate pterygoid?

Laminae (medialis + lateralis) des Proc. pterygoideus
Explanation:
Beside "body" and "greater" and "smaller" wings, the sphenoid bone includes the pterygoid process. This process is defined as follows:

"... pterygoid process of sphenoid bone: either of two processes on the sphenoid bone descending from the points of junction of the greater wings and body of the bone, and each consisting of a lateral and a medial plate (see lamina lateralis processus pterygoidei and lamina medialis processus pterygoidei)."

This means, the pterygoid plates are not part of the os palatinum (Gaumenbein), but are - in German the two "Laminae" of the Proc. pterygoideus or Flügelfortsatz - part of the Keilbein.

This for the second part of your terms: pterygoid plates.

As to pterygoid implant - I am not sure what would be the correct term. (Maybe later on ...)

Sorry - I don\'t know why this was sent twice!

But for the first term \"pterygoid implant\". I was able to find the corresponding term in the title of a doctoral thesis

--> \"Implantat im Proc. pterygoideus\"
