Dadurch wird das Enzym so sehr verform, sodass das aktive Zentrum verschwindet und das Enzym nicht mehr funktioniert. Diese Reaktion ist außerdem IRREVERSIBEL, das heißt, das Enzym kann verbrannt werden. Das Schwermetall lagert sich im aktiven Zentrum an, so dass das Enzym irreversibel verändert und dadurch unbrauchbar wird.
