Wälzlager (Kugellager, Rollenlager etc.) werden meistens mit Fett, gelegentlich mit Öl (z.B. wenn der Schmierstoff zusätzlich Wärme abführen soll) und - in speziellen Fällen (Keramiklager oder wenn, wie z.B. unter Vakuum, Fett/Ölschmierung nicht möglich ist) - mit Feststoffen geschmiert.
Bei der (hier vorliegenden) Ölschmierung sind die Wälzkörper (hier: Kegelrollen) ständig bis zu einer gewissen Höhe in Öl eingetaucht - und dieser Ölkörper wird nun als "Ölsumpf" oder kurz "Sumpf" (engl. "oil sump" bzw. "sump") bezeichnet.
