Zur Frage, ob man das "based" braucht oder nicht:
"basiert" bringt eigentlich technisch wenig, denn eine Legierung ist nun mal auf einer "Grundlage" aufgebaut und mit anderen, geringfügigeren Anteilen legiert. Man liest es aber im Deutschen manchmal so, und gelegentlich kann es für den Stil interessant sein, um ihn zu variieren.

Es gibt übrigens eine Schwermetall-Problematik bei Legierungen, die insbes. für Trinkwasserarmaturen zum Einsatz kommen (daher Messing): Einerseits braucht man die Schwermetalle, um die Korrosion in den Griff zu bekommen (Zinkausscheidung...), andererseits darf man keine drinhaben, weil das Trinkwasser nicht verseucht werden soll.
