Strictly, any physical or chemical change in a rock or mineral subsequent to its formation. As ordinarily used, however, the term excludes cementation or induration of sediments to form hard rocks and implies changes to such an extent that new minerals or new rock textures are developed. As presently used in mining geology, the term applies to low-grade metamorphism produced by hydrothermal action, such as the development of clay minerals in wall rock, and to chemical and mineralogical changes produced by weathering. |
