While practising and recording, I had the impression that the living XXX was instructing and conducting me **by comping**, as I played his orignal score.

(Google-Suche: comping+definition).

6 mins confidence: komplementieren
Explanation: Hier ein Zitat:
http://www.indiana.edu/~smithcj/cjsne167.html
I'd just add to Paul's remarks that, as another outsider to the tradition, I've found it useful as a backer to think in terms of the jazz analogue, which is referred to as "'comping." Numerous pianists have told me, when I was being clueless in a jazz context, that 'comping is a contraction not of "accompanying" but of "complimenting." What that means to me is that my overriding responsibility in a given situation is to play what that situation calls for, one powerful factor in deciding which is what the melody players seem to want. That means playing minimalistically when that's what the players/situation want, and kicking out the jams when that's wanted. I personally _like_ both situations, and especially when playing with somebody who likes the backing to kick him/her in the butt. I like the dynamic interaction that happens when

Explanation: To comp means "to play an irregular rhythmic chord accompaniment for jazz". Maybe this is the meaning of the word here as a verb. In addition, "comp" is widely used as an abbreviation for composed, composer, composite, composition, compositor.

52 mins confidence: durch improvisieren
Explanation: I am not sure that there is really a German equivalent. This term comes from the jazz and popular music world of the middle of the twentieth century (c. 1930 - 1960) and the connotation is of improvising, with considerable approximation - in this case adapting the improvisation to "instruct and conduct", guiding the student by the additions he is improvising.
The word "comping" is similar to the use in the same set of linguistic contexts of "busking" and "vamping" - it´s relaxed and approximate.
Such playing was highly discouraged, or even forbidden in my background, which had a distinct streak of church/classical connections - people of this world consider comping/vamping disorderly, unskilled and disreputable. (I take a different view these days, and happily play this kind of loose improvisation on the harpsichord.)
Ivo Lang´s quote, with its reference to "complementing", seems pretty convincing as the derivation of the term. It´s certainly not related to "composing".
