Der erweiterte Notrufstandard E 911 der FCC (Federal Communications Commission in den USA) ist bei uns vergleichbar mit einer erweiterten Notrufnummer 112. Er erfordert von Mobilfunkbetreibern den Einsatz von Technologien, mittels derer in den USA seit Oktober 2001 die genaue Lokalisierung eines Notrufs ermöglicht wird, der von einem Mobiltelefon aus gesendet wird. Dies löste verbreitete Sorge um den Schutz der persönlichen Privatsphäre aus, die teilweise geradezu an Hysterie grenzt.
