Gehört zu einer Walfangstation:

"We reached the outskirts of the station and passed through the "digesting-house", which was dark inside."

Mehr Kontext zu diesem Begriff gibt es leider nicht. Der Satz stammt aus "Südpol" von E. Shackleton - falls jemand einen Zugang zur deutschen Übersetzung hat, würde mir das auch schon helfen.

Oder weiß jemand, was in einem solchen Haus gemacht wird? Das Fleisch gekocht vielleicht?
