Explanation:
The above suggestions concerning "Glücksrad" sounded fine to me too, except for two small problems:

1. a "Glücksrad" is usually called a "Wheel of Fortune" in English.

I checked AltaVista (English) for:

+"spinning wheel" together with the following words separately

+casino

+"Las Vegas"

+gambling

There were no hits for any of the above combinations with "spinning wheel" as a game or machine in its own right. All the hits were in descriptions of how "Roulette" is played.

2. You mentioned "Automaten". If "Glücksrad" were right, you would need "Glücksradautomat" or "Glücksrad-automat". There were zero hits under Google (German) or AltaVista (German) for "Glücksradautomat" or "Glücksrad-automat". There were also no pertinent Google (English) or AltaVista (English) for "spinning wheel machine".

The above problems bring two questions to mind:

1. Is your author maybe talking about some rather new gambling machine that is perhaps a combination of "Wheel of Fortune" and slot machine? If so, then you can coin the term "Glücksradautomat".

The "Glücksräder" at ooschi's reference site:

www.Stechbrett.de/Stechbretter/Glucksrad/glucksrad.html

are not "Automaten" in my opinion.

2. Is your author possibly talking about some new-fangled "Roulette" machine? If so then "Rouletteautomat" would be better. There were several pertinent hits for "Rouletteautomat", by the way.

there are various: Spinnrad as for the original wheel for spinning wool, Glücksrad got famnous with the show named with the same name: it is a huge wheel that they spin and then the number it stops on wins and Drehscheibe is just a technical term for the thing itself...
