|English term or phrase: R.F.D. NO. (in a certificate of live birth)|
|In a certificate of birth issued in North Carolina they want to know the mother's address or the said "R.F.D. No.". Maybe it's "rural free delivery number" but what would that mean??? Thanks in advance for your help.|
You are right! Rural free delivery was established in 1896. It was a government program to extend postal delivery service to rural areas. Before the introduction of the service people in rural areas had to hire private carriers who carried mail from towns and cities to their rural customers. The R.F.D.No. refers to the number assigned to the postal customer by the Postal Service. As for a translation, I suggest Landzustellungsnummer (nice 'n long), see <http://www.postag.de/index.html?inhalt=/postag/news/foto/fot... unter dem schlagwortmenu and <http://www.dpvkom.de/tv_banst_anlagen_ang.htm>.
