seeing 'machine', one tends to think of metal. I believe that we are talking about the TIMBER CASE of an old sowing machine ?, grammophone ? telephone ?
I'm not sure which machines had been invented in Queen Victoria's days.
But I'm sure this decoration is timber inlayed into timber, otherwise it wouldn't have lasted.
