Blitzgerät frei plazieren

Explanation:
I'm not sure what the exact German expression would be, but this is what is meant.

Cameras are equipped with a "shoe". The "shoe" is the adapter where a flash can be installed, usually located on top of the camera. "Off-shoe shooting" means that the flash has been detached from the camera to achieve different lighting effects.

neutral  Cetacea: It is a good explanation, only the technical term is "entfesselt blitzen". See e.g. http://olypedia.de/Oly-e-Book:Erfolgreich_blitzen// Ist doch schön, wenn Deutsch mal aufregend klingt! ;-)

neutral  Cetacea: That's exactly what "entfesselt blitzen" means, and that's the technical term in German.

-> Yeah, that seems to be the correct term, but entfesselt sounds very strange, as if it originated in advertizing
