English term or phrase:shot garlands
The expression occurs in a fantasy novel. The setting is an ancient sailing ship - five masts. This scene probably takes place on the upper or lower gun deck.
Context: One of the boys ... gave him such a fright that he ducked behind the shot garlands. His bright eyes peeped timidly between the rows of cannonballs.
