The director of my photo agency persuaded me to cut a personal trip short in order to fly to Kuwait City in anticipation of the war in Iraq. I reluctantly traded sleeping under the open stars in the desert of Oman for a room at the Marriott with a view of a cemetery; the stadium where the government conducted public executions was located across the street. Until I was assigned to do a few stories, there was practically nothing to do except wait for the war and contemplate death.
I never once considered whether I would cover the Iraq war. The only question was on which front. From a sociological point of view, I saw meaning and purpose in covering soldiers’ stories, but I didn’t want to spend weeks photographing live fire practices on American bases in a bubble of patriotism. I was also too impatient to wait around for the war to begin.
I had a visa to Iran thanks to an invitation to attend the Tehran Film Festival scheduled for February. After a couple of weeks in Kuwait, I decided to ***pull off assignment*** and fly to Tehran to slip into northern Iraq. A few days later TIME asked if I would like to work with Mick.

Nach ein paar Wochen entschloss ich mich, den Auftrag Auftrag sein zu lassen, flog nach Teheran, um in den Nordirak zu kommen. (Der letzte Halbsatz hat noch Optimierungsbedarf ;-))

Nach ein paar Wochen entschloss ich mich, den Auftrag Auftrag sein zu lassen und nach Teheran zu fliegen, um von dort aus in den Nordirak zu gelangen/kommen.
Als ich die Antwort das erste Mal gelesen habe, habe ich schon innerlich gejubelt, denn das entspricht auch "meinem Stil". Dank der Referenzen und Kommentare von Bernhard sind nun auch die letzten Zweifel ausgemerzt. Vielen Dank an Alle! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer

Many meanings are possible with "pull off" but context is key.
See above link for "pull off" as in withdraw, retreat ... among many other meanings.
Based on the asker's context, it was the journalist's job/project/assignment to wait in Kuwait for the war to begin in Iraq.
But she says: "...but I didn’t want to spend weeks photographing live fire practices on American bases in a bubble of patriotism. I was also too impatient to wait around for the war to begin."
Her assignment was to stay and wait but she "pulled off assignment" and went to Iraq before the war there started.
Clearly, to me, this indicates she basically quit her assignment, cut it short, pulled out, etc (ließ den Auftrag Auftrag sein, gab den Auftrag (kurzerhand) auf, ließ ihn liegen (für wie lange und ob für immer wird im Kontext nicht erwähnt).
Here, "pull off" has nothing to do with bringing an assignment to a successful end (as in durchziehen/etwas erfolgreich über die Bühne bringen etc.)
When I heard it was a feature film with commercial backing, I didn’t really see myself doing it. I thought it’s not really my cup of tea. The idea of getting into bed with someone I’d never worked with, and it being commercial backing – my worry was that it was going to be shots of blokes in trains smiling, patting kids on the head and saying: “Have a nice day on the Eurostar!”
I wrongly thought it was going to be not my territory, and I couldn’t quite understand why they’d asked me, so I pulled off the project. Then I said they should speak to Paul Fraser, the guy I’d co-written with, because he’s worked on a couple of kids’ feature film scripts that are currently in development. And I said, if they wanted to develop that, then maybe I’d look at it further down the line.
