English term or phrase: hug the berm

Irgendwie habe ich das Gefühl, als würde es sich hier um eine Redewendung im Sinne von "Staub fressen handeln". Vielleicht kennt ja jemand hier den Ausdruck?

Hier nun ein wenig Kontext. Die Fotojournalistin befindet sich nach 10 Jahren im Nahen Osten in Ras Lanuf an der Front:

Too many friends and colleagues had been killed and wounded, not to mention psychologically damaged, for me not to consider the big picture. This was hardly an untold story. There were great photographers on the frontlines; guys who loved being in the thick of the shit and photographed the action better than I ever could. I wasn’t on assignment and I needed to leave so I could finish writing this book. That was my calculation, but I went back to the front at Ras Lanuf one more time before leaving the country.

I borrowed a set of body armor. Some colleagues looked at me as though I was strange for wearing it. Others eyed it with envy.

One photographer asked, “So did you get yourself an assignment? Or are you here for fun?”

“Fun?” I walked away not knowing if it was a jibe or a joke.

A plane was spotted overhead. People began running. Fighters took up their anti-aircraft positions and began firing wildly into the air, hoping to shoot the plane out of the sky. I felt totally exposed. A writer friend put his arm around my shoulder, calmly talking to me in the midst of the chaos.

“I think I want to go,” I said.

“But there is no place to go, Kate,” he said. “You can ***hug the berm***.”

I chose to hug him instead of eating dirt. He walked me back to my car.

There was no other time where I felt being a photojournalist and staying safe were so at odds. This wasn’t calculated risk. This was pure chance and I struggled to find the courage or see the purpose.

Dreck fressen

Explanation:
"Dreck fressen" im Schützengraben oder sich quasi möglichst nah in die Erde zu pressen, um Deckung zu haben.
