disagree  Stuart Dykes: In this context, a property developer buys existing properties, does them up and re-sells them at a profit.

-> das bleibt sich im Deutschen gleich -. übrigens: all properties exist before developping and yes, profit is the target

Explanation:
Context!!!

The text provided clearly refers to property letting and property the person inheritied, i.e. existing buildings not undeveloped land.

British TV is full of programmes about people who buy run-down properties, often at auction, and refurbish them so they can be sold at a profit. These people are "property developers".

neutral  Hans G. Liepert: Sanierer hat im Deutschen einen negativen Beigeschmack: Unter den ersten 4 Googleeintragungen für 'Gebäudesanierer' sind bereits 2 Gerichtsfälle aufgeführt

-> OK, I just wanted to get away from "erschließen", which I associate with undeveloped land.

neutral  Steffen Walter: Hans is right. That being said, I'd use "entwickeln" here: to develop properties and add value to them = Immobilien entwickeln und aufwerten [ihren Wert steigern]

-> Suits me. It does seem a very British thing, though. The German housing market just doesn't fluctuate like the British one does.
