English term or phrase: avenue bower
Any ornithologists out there?

Male bowerbirds are the only birds in the world that construct a structure for any purpose other than a nest. Satin Bowerbirds belong to a group of 'avenue' bower builders. (The avenue bowers generally have two parallel walls, with an avenue in the middle). The female will stand in the avenue and watch the male as he performs the courtship display. One postulated explanation for the evolution of the bower is that the walls offer the female protection from overly-aggressive males.

Explanation:
Marcus,
Bowerbirds are called Laubenvögel in German, because the males mostly build bowers to attract females. But they also may build structures that remind us of alleys (avenues?), courtyards and gardens.

See links below.
Hope that helps, happy 02.

agree  Werner George Patels, M.A., C.Tran.(ATIO) (X): We just had a 1-hour documentary on bowerbirds on Canadian TV! Marcus should have watched it before embarking on this "flighty" topic ;-)
