This thing drives me crazy! It is weird if you know what is going on, but don't know the right term in your own language, isn't it?

From all opinions and my own research I have to conclude that these are not sharply defined technical terms, but more announcer jargon. It seems that "lob" is higher than "loft", which again is higher than "float". Lob is really high into the air in an arch-like fashion, loft is an ascending and wide shot over the heads of the defending team and float is a knee-high, not too strong shot to cover space. I guess the difference is not very sharp.

Flugball - weit u. hoch bis halbhoch geschlagener Ball, der eine relativ flache Flugbahn beschreibt.

"Loft a ball = den Ball wird in einen extrem hohen Bogen geschlagen, um Spielern auf Base Positionen zu ermöglichen, nach Berührung aller Basen, zum Home Base zurückzukehren, und damit einen Home-Run zu erzielen. Float a ball = bedeutet dass der Werfer den Ball überraschend langsam wirft, und damit den Keulenmann veranlasst vorzeitig zuzuschlagen"!
