English term or phrase: the winch slips
Event: Maxi Rolex Cup 2004, 4. Tag, 2. Durchgang
Comment: "A good start from the new Zealand boat Alfa's Ben Ainslie, leaves the rest of the fleet in their wake. But jibing to the bottom mark, the winch slips on Alfa, and Wild Oats pounce to grab the lead."
Unklarheit: Was ist mit der Winsch passiert? Logisch wäre "die Schot rutscht von der Winsch", aber das steht nicht da. - Danke nochmals!
die Schot rutscht auf der Winschtrommel
When the winch slips, it lets more sheet out than needed. In this case "when jibing to the bottom mark", they are jibing with the wind astern, so the sails are under full load. It is extremely difficult and slow to winch the sheet back in, and sometimes they have to luff the sail to take off the load, slowing the boat down and losing valuable time in a race.
The sheet doesn't actually come off the winch drum, it just slips, releasing more line than necessary, which has to be trimmed back in.
