|English term or phrase: mannigefrei|
|Die Tanks duerfen nur mit mannigefreien Korrosionsschutzanstrichen versehen werden.|
paint (or corrosion preventing treatment) free of red lead (or not containing red lead)
"Mannige" would appear to be a typographical error, it should be "Mennige" which is a widely used red lead primer. "minium-free" might be another option
Kucera: Dictionary of Chemistry German-English : Mennige f (rote Modifikation nach DIN 55916 - Korrosionsschutz) (Anstr, Glas) / red lead (oxide), minium n, glassmakers' lead
Kucera: Dictionary of Chemistry German-English : Korrosionsschutzanstrichstoff m (Anstr) / corrosion-preventing varnish
Red Lead had long been the most important pigment in the production of metal protective paints, particularly metal primers. In fact for more than a century pure red lead paint has been considered the standard priming coat for the protection of iron and steel against corrosion and rust. Red lead pigment was not only used in pure red lead paint, but also used in a variety of multiple pigment paints, containing red lead as the principal pigment, which are desired to meet specific conditions. Red lead and linseed oil paints were designed and used to meet exacting requirements for slow and quick drying, low cost, light weight, salt or fresh water exposure, or other conditions as the formulator or specifier desired.
Properly formulated multiple pigment or pure red lead paints adhere tenaciously and form impervious films resistant to water, many corrosive gases, and air Red lead has a strong affinity for the film, which is tough and elastic when dry, so that it can expand and contract as the surface expands and contracts with temperature changes. Furthermore, red lead effectively inhibits the anodic solution of steel through its oxidizing character and buffering action. The basic character of red lead also minimizes the destructive action of low molecular weight organic acids resulting from the breakdown of oleoresinous vehicles after prolonged exposure to weathering and adverse environmental conditions. Red lead has a good blister rating, affords excellent protection to the base metal, has low weight loss and slight visual evidence of attack on the steel. It is the priming coat of paint on such bridges as the San Francisco-Oakland Bay, Brooklyn, and George Washington Bridges; the majority of state highway departments used red lead primers on steel; by far the majority of railroads used red lead for priming steel structures; millions of tons of ships including the US Navy have been primed with red lead paint; and far more than any other paint it had been depended upon for the first coat on steel structures of all kinds.
Irgazines into oil paint, which have proven their excellent lightfast qualities in the coatings industry. They are very strong, bright and offer a non-toxic alternative to the cadmiums. Remembering what our favorite paintings are solidly built up with, we are also offering historical lead paints (Lead Antimoniate [Naples Yellow], Lead-Tin Yellow, Lead Chloride Yellow [Turner's Yellow], Red Lead [Minium], and Litharge.)
