These specifications define the defects and lay down their permissible limits, for the procurement of special size sleepers/ties (timbers) for bridges, points & crossings. A list of the species of durable and semi-durable hard wood which shall be acceptable as special size sleepers and their average useful life in the track, as assessed by Pakistan Railways, has also been given in Chapter-V.
