The OEL protects the generator field from damage by events that require or produce abnormally high field currents. (OEL: Περιοριστής Υπερδιέγερσης).
These high currents, over an extended time, can overheat the field and cause damage.
Generator fields are designed to ANSI® Standard C50.13, which specify an overvoltage as a function of time that the field is allowed to follow.
