Script-driven imagery paradigms are typically explicitly intended to produce (or reproduce) specific emotional states. Scripts can be standardized or individually tailored. In the case of individually tailored scripts, autobiographical events are often used to optimize salience and reliability of response. Before the imaging session, the subject (with the help of the investigators) composes autobiographical scripts associated with the most vivid experiences the subject can remember. For example, an autobiographical script of a sad experience may involve the recall of the death of a family member, while an autobiographical script of a happy experience may involve the recall of the birth of a child. The scripts are then typically recorded with audiotape and played back to subject during the imaging session. The subject is instructed to imagine himself/herself in the situation, as if it were actually happening and to maintain this state during the imaging session. Although autobiographical script-driven imagery paradigms produce particularly robust emotional responses due to the salience of the stimuli, the variance in the stimulus conditions due to incomplete/imperfect standardization represents a limitation. All script-driven imagery paradigms entail the production/recall of sensory images, and hence the stimuli are in some sense externally prompted and internally generated.
