eirhnaiws dialegwmen dialektw Explanation: The w's are omegas, the h is an eta, and the last w has an iota subscript. The "let us" and the "through" are both communicated by the inflections of the words. Liddell-Scott-Jones |

Tais dialektois dialogizo:metha eire:niko:s. Explanation: Tais dialektois dialogizo:metha eire:niko:s. [The _e:_ represents "eta", the _o:_ represents "omega", and the _th_ represents "theta". The word order in ancient Greek is highly flexible, so that any of the following sequences are permissible: 1. Tais dialektois dialogizo:metha eire:niko:s. 2. Tais dialektois eire:niko:s dialogizo:metha. 3. Dialogizo:metha tais dialektois eire:niko:s. 4. Dialogizo:metha eire:niko:s tais dialektois. 5. Eire:niko:s tais dialektois dialogizo:metha. 6. Eire:niko:s dialogizo:metha tais dialektois. TAIS DIALEKTOIS -- "in/with languages", the dative plural of HE: DIALEKTOS used instrumentally. DIALOGIZO:METHA -- "let us discuss/communicate", the subjunctive plural of DIALOGIZOMAI functioning as a jussive (command to the first person plural). EIRE:NIKO:S -- "peacefully", the adverbial form of the adjective EIRE:NIKOS, itself a derivative of the noun HE: EIRE:NE: (the source of the English name "Irene", by the way). It is also possible to use the somewhat less common word EIRE:NAIO:S. Ph. D. in ancient Greek, college instructor of Latin, Greek, and other languages. |
