My mind squirmed, fearing he too would chastise me for living here.

חשבתי לנסח את זה כך -- מחשבותיי פרפרו מפחד שגם הוא יגער בי על שאני חי כאן.

and the word "chastise"...shouldn't be translated exactly?

Asker: Thank so much. To answer your question in a privious paragraph he wrote: חלפו רק כמה ימים עד שכמה מתלמידיו לחצו עלי להתחייב. "זה לא נכון מצדך לחיות כאן," הם אמרו. "עליך להצטרף לתנועה שלנו ולנסוע איתנו." and then later the guru asked him: "כמה זמן חיית/אתה חי כאן?" הוא שאל. מחשבותיי פרפרו מפחד שגם הוא יגער בי על שאני חי כאן. So it wasn't really ענישה
