I agree to you Rameshji, when you say that we need to surpass the borders and come in an open and global space.

I think that small space provided here, is not the right place to discuss over the term मज़दूर as the space here can't be widened to compare everyone's response. I request everyone involved here to discuss it in our own Hindi forum as this term is related to Hindi language.

We translate Social Worker as समाज सेवी and Health Worker as स्वास्थ्य कर्मी. Depending upon the profession, "worker" takes many terms in Hindi; for example: कार्यकर्ता, कर्मचारी, कर्मी, सेवी, कामगार, वेतनभोगी, श्रमिक and मजदूर .
The problem with श्रमिक and मजदूर is they are defined in Hindi, Nepali and Urdu as manual workers; mental labor is excluded from the term--I had thought mental labor is included in the terms. Rawal Sahab and Prakaash Ji are right in protesting that translators aren't मजदूर. In Urdu, we have the general term कारकुन, but that has a different meaning in Hindi. श्रमिक comes from Sanskrit. But मजदूर has equal validity in Hindi. मजदूर itself comes from Farsi and is defined there as "wage-earner", "hired worker", "hireling", [adj.] "hired", "mercenary".
As already said, "worker" is a respectable address in English, and it encompasses all the professions. And, as such, when we translate this term into Hindi, we need to surpass t

Thanks to Rawal Sahab, Lalit Ji, Sanjeev Ji and Prakaash Ji, a lively discussion has come to fore on this linguistic issue. Let me, at the outset itself, clarify that I haven't disagreed or stayed neutral to any response to the term. Rawal Sahab has himself clarified that "बोलचाल की भाषा में...". And "बोलचाल की भाषा" is, by its very nature, limited to the notions of the people that speak it. Written language is, however, based on firm cultural attainments, and philosophical tenets related to the time.
I take Prakaash Ji's addition "श्रमिक" as synonym for "मज़दूर". And Lalit Ji's response being posted earlier than Prakaash Ji's, I just supported the view--through my agreement--that a general term for "worker" needs to be adopted in Hindi too.
"Worker" in English, is a respectable address to anybody. And it is a general term. One who works is a worker. All professions are encompassed in this term. Thus we have Social Workers, Health Workers...
We have a problem in Hindi, however. We translate Social Worker as समाज सेवी and Health Worker as स्वास्थ्य कर�

.. हो सकता है, कल हममें से ही कोई इन मज़दूरों के लिए हितकारी नीति नियम गढ़ रहा हो! हमसे अधिक उपयुक्त 'मज़दूर' की यह पदवी उन मैनेजरों के लिए रहेगी, जो रात रात भर जागकर इंटरनेट के ज़रिए अपने कामों को अंजाम देते रहते हैं और दिन भर अपने कार्यालयों में अनुवादकों के साथ मज़दूरों की तरह बर्ताव करके उनका शोषण करते हैं। उन्‍हें आप चाहे मज़दूर कहें या शोषक, दोनों ही शब्‍द उपयुक्त जान पड़ते हैं। शायद इसी को उन्‍होंने दूसरा नाम दे रखा है MULTI-TASKING! :))

हां, रावल जी ने यहां जो विकल्‍प प्रस्‍तुत किए हैं, वे बाकायदा ऐसे शब्‍दकोश से उद्धृत हैं जिनका प्रयोग आधुनिक शिक्षक, विद्यार्थी और भाषाविद सभी कर रहे हैं। यहां यह स्‍पष्ट कर दूं, कि हम अनुवादक worker तो हैं यानि one who works, लेकिन मज़दूर कतई नहीं, क्‍योंकि मज़दूरों से हमारा सामान्‍य अर्थ बोझा ढोने वाले, पूर्णत: शारीरिक श्रम मात्र करने वालों से होता है। ..

What is a professional? Is professional not a worker in an occupation--a skilled worker? Is any professional any angel descended directly from heaven? The Meaning of Profession is:
1. an occupation requiring special training in the liberal arts or sciences, esp one of the three learned professions, law, theology, or medicine
2. the body of people in such an occupation
...
And that of Professional is:
1. of, relating to, suitable for, or engaged in as a profession
2. engaging in an activity for gain or as a means of livelihood
3. extremely competent in a job, etc.
4. undertaken or performed for gain or by people who are paid

What are we as professionals? "Extremely competent in a job, etc.", isn't it? Does that any way negate our status as workers?
We, in India, have a culture that descends from caste-system, and the term "worker" is not seen as honorable. But the fact is, we are not salaried employees, we aren't covered by medical insurance and other entitlements that employees enjoy... If we don't get work--and we share this fate with most of the workers--we shall no more be able to adulate ourselves with the label of professionals or skilled workers.

यदि कोई स्वतंत्र अनुवादक अपने मानसिक श्रम से जीवननिर्वाह कर रहा है यानी वह कोई एजेंसी नहीं चला रहा या काम को "सबलेट" नहीं कर रहा तो अवश्य ही वह उक्त व्यापक श्रेणी के अंतर्गत आएगा। और भूंमडलीकरण के दौर में तो इसी प्रकार अन्य कामों में लगे ऐसे लोगों की तादाद तेजी से बढ़ी है।

मैंने एक श्रेणी के तौर पर "सफ़ेद कॉलर मज़दूर, सफेदपोश मज़दूर" कहा है और यह शाब्दिक अनुवाद नहीं है। किसी व्यक्ति विशेष के संदर्भ में अवश्य ही कार्यालय कर्मी इत्यादि का प्रयोग हो सकता है। मज़दूर यानी श्रमिक। white collar workers यानी वे श्रमिक जो manual labor से प्रत्यक्ष तौर पर नहीं जुड़े हैं। उदाहरण के लिए केंद्रीय श्रमिक संगठनों में अधिकांश तो white collar workers ही होते हैं। और बीमा, बैंक के कर्मचारी भी "दुनिया के मज़दूरो एक हो" का नारा लगाना नहीं भूलते।

सफेद कॉलर या सफेदपोश मज़दूर नहीं होते, बल्कि कर्मचारी होते हैं। हमें इसका शाब्दिक अनुवाद नहीं करना चाहिए। अरविंद कुमार के English-Hindi Dictionary & Index में White Collared Worker के लिए office worker/कार्यालय कर्मी दिया गया है। इसके अन्य अर्थ मध्यमवर्ग, मध्यमवर्गीय, वैतनिक आदि दिए गए हैं।

white collar workers एक ख़ास तबके को दर्शाता है। प्रत्यक्ष रूप से शारीरिक श्रम में लगे blue-collar मज़दूरों से इतर कामगारों की यह एक अलग श्रेणी है। इसीलिए हिंदी में भी आमतौर पर सफ़ेद कॉलर मज़दूर, सफेदपोश मज़दूर का ही प्रयोग किया जाता है। चूँकि यह एक ख़ास श्रेणी है इसलिए मेरी समझ से इसका अनुवाद वेतनभोगी कार्मिक, नौकरीपेशा या बाबूलोग करना उपयुक्त न होगा।
