English to Hindi translations [Non-PRO] Cinema, Film, TV, Drama / जय संतोषी माँ | | English term or phrase: O, devotees! = रे भक्तों or रे भक्तो (?) | Hi,
This occurs in the जय संतोषी माँ song.
My question – if a plural noun is vocative (i.e. someone is being addressed), doesn't it lose the nasal element?
In other words,
not आओ रे भक्तों यह माता है सबकी हमजोली
but आओ रे भक्तो यह माता है सबकी हमजोली
रे, if I understand rightly, is like Eng. “o”, i.e. it shows someone is being addressed, so after रे, भक्तों becomes भक्तो...
I seem to remember reading something to this effect in McGregor's Hindi course, but do not have the book with me.
I know this is a seeming small difference, but am I right, please?
Best wishes

| | रे भक्तो | Explanation: Yes, you are right. If a plural noun is vocative (i.e. someone is being addressed), it losse the nasal element and, therefore,
not आओ रे भक्तों यह माता है सबकी हमजोली
but आओ रे भक्तो यह माता है सबकी हमजोली is correct.
While we address to a group of people or gathering, we say,
देवियो और सज्जनो, भाइयो और बहनो, बंधुओ, मित्रो, दोस्तो, भक्तो etc.
I am glad to know that you know this seemingly small difference, and you are perfectly right.
