English to Hindi translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Food & Dairy
English term or phrase:restaurants
I selected PRO for this question, exactly because the average person wouldn't think much of it and just give me रेस्तरां, which is not Hindi, just an English transcription. I know, it's popular in India, but I don't care, I'm looking for a pure Hindi word, even if you scold me for that. So it is a PRO level, because somebody, who knows the restaurant field and the different types and names of restaurants in India, that the person I'm looking for, not the average person. And no, you don't have to work in the restaurant business, just give more thought to this question, than the average person, that's all.
Now having gotten rid of cultural colonialism, I'm moving on to what I really need. I got this word from my 1993 dictionary and not knowing Hindi grammar, I just copied it as भोजना-लय. However, somebody told me that the dash (hyphen) is not needed. Well, here's my problem with that: I'd like to know, whether this is really a one-root word OR is this a compound word, made up from 2 words joined together: भोजना and लय? So if these are 2 words indeed, then I'd like to know, what भोजना means and what लय means, in order to understand this.
But that's not all. My dictionary obviously gave the singular form for restaurant. But I need it in plural: restaurants. So how do we have to change भोजना-लय to become plural?

So if you're really against the mindless use of English in any country, especially when that country has its own word for it, then why submit to English in case of such a simple, basic word. It's totally unnecessary in my opinion. In languages, where you don't have your own word for it, just the derivative of restaurant, there unfortunately we have no choice, but to accept it. But here we do have a choice: भोजनालय and the English-imported रेस्तरां is not a bit better. I also noticed that you (Suyash) spelled रेस्तरां differently and I haven't found your version anywhere, but I found my version both in Google Translation Tools and in my 1993 printed dictionary. You may find it interesting to know that the term 'restaurant' is mostly spelled as रेस्तरां in media and as रेस्तराँ in academic writings and literature. There is a tendency to avoid the ँ sign, but I prefer to use it to show the difference in pronunciation. However, I don't use it when I have to follow a certain style manual or spelling instruction.

भोजन means food; and the suffix आलय the place, etc. Hence भोजनालय implies the place where food is served.
