Mivel a három említett folyamat a biomassza kémiai energiájának átalakítását - és ezáltal hasznosítását - célozza, felmerül az "energiahasznosítási technológia" is. A "konverzió" azért ennél tágabb értelmű; ha pl. több lépésben történik az energia kinyerése, vagyis a konverziós lépés eredményeként előálló reakciótermékből újabb reakcióval további energiát lehet hasznosítani, akkor az első lépésre inkább a konverzió szót használnám, mint az energiahasznosítást. Azt is fel lehet hozni az "energiahasznosítási" megoldással szemben, hogy amit hasznosítunk, az sokkal inkább az alapanyag, vagyis a biomassza.
