of mineral phases. The measurement of mineral liberation
is usually accomplished by mounting the particles in a
resin matrix, polishing a surface and examining the surface
with an optical or electron microscope. Images of the surface
are digitised and processed with an image analyser. The image
analyser measures the liberation by determining the mineral
composition of the individual particle sections. This method of
measuring liberation is stereologically biased. Liberated particles
will always yield liberated sections whereas locked particles
can yield liberated or locked sections. As a result, mineral
liberation will always be over-estimated."
