A lendítőkerék (népiesen: lendkerék) egyik legfőbb feladata a motorban egyenetlenül keletkező nyomaték-impulzusok kiegyenlítése. Egyes esetekben, ha a felhasználási célhoz képest még így is túl nagy a rángatás, a lendítőkerékbe klf. (jellemzően rugós) csillapítóelemeket építenek be. Ilyenkor a nevében is hangsúlyozzák, hogy ő "kiegyenlítő".
