Per leasing operativo si intende, in mancanza di una normativa specifica, un contratto mediante il quale il locatore (intermediario finanziario), contro pagamento di un canone periodico, concede in locazione al conduttore (cliente ed utilizzatore del cespite) senza che questo ne divenga proprietario, beni strumentali aventi caratteristiche standardizzate, unitamente ad una serie di servizi collaterali. Questi fattori sintetizzando ed affinando la teoria di base del leasing finanziario, che supera il concetto di proprietà del bene per l'impresa sostituendolo via via con il concetto di redditività dello stesso, hanno creato, anche nel nostro paese, spazi per un'ulteriore evoluzione del prodotto verso il leasing operativo.
