Greetings
I have been asked for a possible Italian translation of this term in the following context: "Si tratta di "chiefdom" riferito agli indiani d'America. Nel testo si dice che erano riuniti in bande, tribù, chiefdoms e confederazioni"
Vedo che il testo usa la parola inglese, appunto, ma personalmente non ho nessun idea di come potrebbe essere tradotto. Any input much appreciated.

Si chiamano ancora oggi così molte comunità canadesi, dove viene eletto un Chief e un Council nelle First Nations.
Anche negli USA si trova questo termine, (ad es. "Fond-du-Lac Band of Indians". etc.)che indica non certo società gerarchizzate (al contrario!) ma piuttosto società a organizzaz. sociale molto individualista sotto la guida di un capo nominato (non eletto!) dai clan familiari che compongono la comunità, specie per incarichi precisi (guerra, caccia, ecc.) Ovviamente questo varia da un'area culturale all'altra.

si vuole tradurre, si potrebbe forse dire "capitanato": in italiano si usa per il territorio o la giurisdizione di un capitano (in senso storico); "capitano" in questa accezione vuole anche dire "capo"... (fonte: enc. Treccani)

concordo che il termine antropologicamente più esatto è "chiefdom", magari si può lasciare in inglese e inserire in nota qualcosa tipo: gruppi radunati attorno all'autorità personale di un capo...

Per esempio, i primi uomini europci che sono arrivati nella Polinesia hanno trovato che la società era già in un livello intermedio tra la società tribale e lo stato. Ci sono alcuni che hanno orrore delle periodizzazioni e delle definizioni, e affermano che si tratta di un passaggio talmente graduale che non si possono enucleare un modello, una definizione e una classificazione per questa realtà che tutt'al più potremmo chiamare intermedia. I miei studi e ricerche in questo campo risalgono a diversi anni fa.
Difficile far passare un termine tribale all'italiano dove i termini corrispondenti sono piuttosto familisti e legati alla criminalita' organizzata :-).

Ho trovato questo interessante sito sugli stereotipi appiccicati agli amerindiani:

Europeans projected chiefdom onto Native Americans because they could not easily conceive of people living in a civil society without permanent formal rank. Also, making a 'chief' of a respected Native (and sometimes any Native who happened to be handy) gave a European leader an opposite with whom to deal—someone who could sell land, for instance."

The fur trade in Virginia and the neighboring Carolinas eventually became highly centralized and controlled. This was not always the case. Chiefdoms had only recently developed at the time that Europeans landed on the continent. Centralization of native power to concentrate participation in a European market economy took some time. Europeans were accustomed to an economy where trade and sales were handled through merchants or "middlemen" who collected a variety of objects from craftspeople or producers and then sold those products through a series of distributors (not unlike our wholesale/retail market system today). These foreigners were not inclined to trade with every individual Indian who may have had five deer skins on hand. Instead, they pressured native groups to have one (or a few) individuals who would act as points of contact for all trade, reinforcing the growing consolidation of power present in the existing chiefdoms. European traders knew, just as merchants do today, that it is easier to control the cost of goods and tip the balance of trade (not to mention political power) in your favor when you can influence supply and demand. The result of this pressure was that within each native chiefdom, the chief attempted to exercise control over all external social and economic relations, especially trade. This centralized control of trade was effective at constraining contact with the Indians who belonged to groups well-incorporated in the trade networks. It has been hypothesized that those Indians explicitly not integrated into a specific network in the deer skin trade developed "alternative" trading strategies for other, non-fur objects such as pots, mats, baskets, and food.

Chiefdom quindi sembra essere un termine storico per indicare la prima risposta al contatto (concentrazione di poteri a livello locale, come risposta e non come organizzazione diciamo "spontanea")

Il problema e' rendere chiefdom con un sostantivo parallelo agli altri. Se si potesse cambiare costruzione proporrei:
erano organizzati in bande, tribu', confederazioni o sotto un capopopolo.

Certo che questi termini hanno accezioni negative in italiano, e bisogna stare attenti.
Ma nemmeno mi sogno di idealizzare la tribu' come ideale di organizzazione sociale....
