In questo caso, 'ego' non ha una valenza "psicanalitica" ma semplicemente serve a chiarire che si parla della personalità più profonda, schietta e vera dell'interessato.
Poi, detto fra noi ;) se il testo lo accettasse/richiedesse, considerato che viene chiarito che l'espressione viene usata indifferentemente da amici e nemici, forse utilizzerei una forma più colloquiale, tipo
