A second concept behind the spoon illusion has been documented.
When spoons are shaken just so, they suddenly appear floppy. The
illusion occurs because your visual system has two different mechanisms
for seeing lines: one that specializes in edges and another that
specializes in the ends of lines. To detect the edge of a line, you rely
on neurons in your primary visual cortex. To localize the ends of a
line, however, you call on endstopped cells that are tuned to respond
to the ends of long contours.

Recentemente, questo comportamento e stato osservato anche in certi tipi di cellule semplici e
complesse e quindi il termine ipercomplesse tende a non essere piu usato e si parla quindi di
cellule semplici e complesse con inibizione terminale (simple end-stopped e complex end-stopped),
per distiguerle da quelle "normali".

Il campo recettivo delle cellule semplici risulta dalla somma dei campi recettivi di cellule del genicolato. Più cellule semplici con lo stesso orientamento convengono su una cellula complessa alternando le loro bande eccitatorie ed inibitorie, per cui lo stimolo efficace risulta essere un bordo. Processi simili spiegano anche la presenza di cellule, sia semplici che complesse, dotate di inibizione terminale (per le quali cioè esiste uno stimolo di lunghezza ottimale).
