This patient was noted initially to have low-titer inhibitor, which remained low (< 5 BU) for over 1 year and rose to nearly 13 BU. In the same time frame as inhibitor development, the patient was diagnosed with a monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS).

"After an inhibitor is detected, the patient receives a test called the Bethesda assay to measure the strength, or titer, of the inhibitor. (Why Bethesda? It’s named for the place where American hematologists designed the test in the early 1970s—Bethesda, Maryland.) Inhibitors are measured in Bethesda units (BUs), with low-titer inhibitors measuring five BUs or less and high-titer inhibitors measuring more than five BUs. "
