Explanation:
A prescindere da termini intuitivi usati comunemente nella vita quotidiana, nell'ambito specializzato dei test in Italia si parla di "test di profitto" riferendosi a test cognitivi che valutano il prodotto dell'apprendimento in settori specifici (vedi i link sotto).
Quindi parlando di proficienza si fa riferimento all'apprendimento quale frutto dell'esperienza e non alle capacità innate (implicite in concetti come competenza, abilità, ecc.).

Possono essere ulteriormente suddivisi in:
- test per la valutazione sommativa (compiti elementari) con una conseguente classificazione su una scala undidimensionale (riuscita in quella materia)
- test per la valutazione formativa che danno luogo ad un profilo anzichè ad una classificazione su una scala unidimensionale (obiettivo didattico: ortografia, operazioni, ecc.).

Diverse le classificazioni di test nella letteratura professionale in Italia:
oggetivi vs. proiettivi;
cognitivi vs. di personalità ecc.

Seguendo un autore americano, Gregory, potrei riportare (in inglese) la seguente macro-classificazione:
Ability tests, measure: intelligence, ACHIEVEMENT, aptitude, neuropsychological functions;
Personality tests, measure: personality traits, dynamic motivation, personal adjustment, psychiatric symtomatology, social skills, attitudibal characteristics.

Specifically, the Acchievement tests: measure a person's learning successor accomplishment in a subject or task (i.e. in a well defined domain).
Examples:
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) covers grades K - 8
Tests of Acchievement and Proficiency (TAP) - covers grades 9 - 12

Quindi test di "Achievement" e "Proficiency" in Inglese sono quelli che in Italia vengono chiamati test di "Profitto".
