Explanation:
Premetto che, anche se è opinabile, sono per tradurre tutto sempre il più possibile.
Però, in questo caso, ho guardato un sacco di siti tecnici su cuffie, stereo, pc e microfoni ma, anche se sembra assurdo, viene SEMPRE usato il termine 'mute'
quindi ti consiglierei di mettere così la frase:
"il tasto permette di controllare sia la regolazione del volume sia la funzione mute"

Questa è una proposta ma mi sembra anche plausile l'alternativa di Mirra. Nel caso dovessi mantenere il "mute" io tradurrei: per regolare il volume o attivare la modalità mute.
