Penso voglia dire che i driver sono eseguiti direttamente dal sistema operativo guest (cioè quello della macchina virtuale) che quindi non deve appoggiarsi ai driver del sistema principale (nel quale è stato installata la macchina virtuale).
(I vantaggi penso che siano migliori prestazioni e meno problemi di connettività.)
