Alla fine ho scelto "vaganti" perché mi sembrava il termine più vicino a stray/randagio.
Avrei preferito "randagio", ma lo associo troppo ai cani...

Ho visto usata l'espressione "file randagio" in alcuni siti tecnici (FAQ e simili). Una search di "file randagio" con Google ne tira fuori più di una decina
