English term or phrase: street food
the speaker is making a comparison between the fare offered at "street food" restaurants and "fine-dining restaurants:
"At the same time, Australian cuisine was evolving. At home - and in "street food" restaurants, more savoury and lightly spiced flavours were replacing sweeter, "neutral" tastes. And even fine dining restaurants were offering more olive-oil based dishes, and fewer butter-based ones"

in the context of this speech this seems to me to be the most fitting - this was particularly difficult because, as has been mentioned here, there is such a fundamental difference (less so now) between Australian & Italian concepts of dining - so I can't use the wonderfully expressive 'trattoria", as it is widely understood here as an "Italian" restaurant - and the speaker is referring to indoor "street-side" restaurants which are cheaper than "fine-dining", so chiosco may be misleading in this context - we don't have as many chioschi here as I have seen in Italy, they are certainly rare and always tiny - all responses helped a lot - thank you all so much for your input.
