Costanti/Sistematici incrementi di produttività conducono ad aumenti nella produzione in quasi tutti i paesi, ma l'espansione delle aree (produttive) è un valore/fattore aggiuntivo nei paesi in via di sviluppo.
Secondo me 'area expansion' si riferisce all'espansione fisica delle aree in cui si può produrre qualcosa (prodotti agricoli? o semplicemente aprire delle industrie, o simili?) Nei paesi in via di sviluppo lo 'spazio' fisico non è ancora stato debitamente sfruttato.
Gli esempi in rete confortano questa interpretazione, ma ovviamente il tuo testo ti aiuterà a capire se l'interpretazione che ti ho proposto è accettabile nel tuo caso.
