The TAN is a neutralization number that comes from a titration test measuring the level of acidic materials in the lube oil. It is the amount of potassium hydroxide required to neutralize the acids in a gram of the oil sample. The acids in a lube oil system can cause corrosion at different levels if not controlled. Most oils have additives to prevent oxidation and rust. Monitoring the Total Acid Number over time will follow the additive depletion and decomposition of the oil. The TAN will gradually increase with time and the maximum allowable limit is 1.0 for some Gas Turbine Engines, or 1.0 above the new oil is a generic high limit. A high TAN can be the result of overheating, improper oil type, extended oil drain intervals, or a high sulfur fuel.
The TBN is a neutralization number similar to the TAN except it is a measurement of the alkaline content or **base materials vice acidic**. This is also a way to track additive depletion and will generally be used for lubricants used in diesel engines and gas compressors. |
