The purpose of this step is to achieve the initial bonding of the ceramic particles. As this occurs the spaces between the particles are substantially eliminated resulting in shrinkage of the component and an increase in the bulk density of the material. The change in the material is arrived at by a combination of heat and time. Additionally, during the firing the organic binding agents used to produce the green compact are burnt off.
